During Pregnancy Other Hormones Cause Gestational Diabetes

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

During pregnancy, other hormones in the body cause gestational diabetes to make the body insulin resistant.

Dieticians, will according to a physician’s recommendations, work out a sample diet for gestational diabetes that will meet the specific needs of both mother and baby. Obesity (before conception) is a big risk factor for the development of gestational diabetes. Many obstetricians will recommend that obese women only gain about 10 pounds during pregnancy to help minimize possible delivery complications.

Although gestational diabetes often disappears after the baby’s birth, there is always a possibility that type 2 diabetes will occur later in life.

Low Blood Pressure Can Mean Cardiovascular Problems

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

While high blood pressure is dangerous, low blood pressure can also have dangers that impact negatively on a person’s health. Some low blood pressure sufferers are in great physical shape and have strong cardiovascular systems. They normally experience low blood pressure when getting up from a seated position, resulting in a short spell of dizziness.

Low blood pressure can mean cardiovascular problems or could be the result of changing anti-hypertensive medications. Symptoms include lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, rapid shallow breathing, clammy and cold skin, lack of concentration, nausea, fainting and fatigue. Causes of low blood pressure symptoms go further than these as some people suffer from Shy-Drager syndrome (neurological damage) low blood pressure after consuming a large meal which means a lot of blood is directed to the gastrointestinal system for digestion. Other common reasons are medication side effects, pregnancy, dehydration, blood loss, infections and anemia.

What Are The Differences Between Herpes and Shingles?

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Herpes varicella-zoster will most likely lie dormant for many years after an initial infection and will most likely reactivate in certain conditions. The reactivated virus causes Shingles which is common in people over 60 years of age who may have high stress levels or younger people whose immune systems have been compromised or recipients of organ transplants, cancer victims and the effects of medication used on immune systems.

Shingles infection mostly presents in the body’s trunk or buttocks alongside specific nerve dermatomes and stays on one side following a specific nerve bundle pathway. Shingles and herpes differ in that shingles is not commonly reactivated a second time after healing (provided the person’s immune system is not compromised) while herpes can reoccur any time. Shingles is painful and often clears on its own requiring supportive pain treatment.
